GTX 1660 Super 6GB vs RX 580 8GB Mining Hashrates for after the Ethereum Merge

The GTX 1660 Super 6GB and the RX 580 8GB stand out as top choices for individuals looking for budget-friendly graphics cards for mining operations. As we move into 2022, these cards continue to be favored by both gamers and miners for their exceptional ratio of cost to performance, despite the presence of newer models. Currently, each card delivers comparable Ethereum mining performance, with an average hash rate of 32 MH/s. In terms of power consumption, the GTX 1660 Super 6GB uses approximately 70 W, whereas the RX 580 8GB has a slightly higher usage, around 90 W.

Here is a list of the best CPUs for mining.

However, Ethereum is expected to move from Proof-of-Work to Proof-of-Stake. This shift to PoS will make it very difficult to mine ETH and cause many miners to migrate to other mineable cryptocurrencies such as Flux (FLUX), Ergo (ERGO), and Ravencoin (RVN). Between the GTX 1660 Super 6GB and RX 580 8GB, which card is the better choice for mining these other coins?

For more information about the specifications and hashrates, as well as a comparison of the GTX 1660 Super 6GB and RX 580 8GB, keep reading.

As mentioned above, the GTX 1660 Super 6GB and RX 580 8GB offer similar Ethereum mining hashrates of around 32 MH/s. However, the RX 580 8GB card consumes 20 W more power than the GTX 1660 Super 6GB. Similar comparisons regarding the hashrates and power consumption were made for other promising coins that can be mined by these two cards after Ethereum goes PoS, as shown in the two tables above.

For Flux mining, the GTX 1660 Super 6GB takes the win here, giving a hashrate of 30 Sol/s, which is double that of the RX 580 8GB. Nonetheless, the GTX 1660 Super 6GB does consume 99 W, which is slightly more than the RX 580 8GB, at 82 W. On the other hand, the RX 580 8GB wins out for Conceal/Ryo and Beam mining, offering hashrates of 1.736 kH/s and 19.10 Sol/s, respectively, while consuming less power than the GTX 1660 Super 6GB.

For Ravencoin and Ergo mining, the hashrates of the two cards are more or less similar at under 62 MH/s. Depending on the overclock or underclock settings, the GTX 1660 Super 6GB may consume less power than the RX 580 8GB without jeopardizing the mining hashrate.

From testing by Red Panda Mining, the GTX 1660 Super 6GB was unable to mine Cortex as there was not enough memory or VRAM, while the RX 580 8GB could not mine Conflux. Hence, if you are focusing on either of these two coins, you may simply ignore the card that cannot mine the coin of your choice.

Another factor to consider when choosing between these two cards is the price. As of the time of writing, the RX 580 8GB goes for around $250 to $300, which is cheaper than the GTX 1660 Super 6GB, which goes for about $300 to $400.

Regardless of your choice, you will be getting your hands on a decent, budget-friendly option for mining. Thus, if you are looking to mine any of the promising above, it might be a good idea to get your hands on a few of these cards right now!
