At first, it was thought that this improvement was to mitigate the shortages caused by the increasing demand from cryptocurrency mining. However, it became apparent that the main motive behind the 12GB RTX 2060’s release was to capitalize on the situation by offering miners GPUs that could boost their mining efficiency. The NVIDIA RTX 2060 12GB does not feature the Lite Hash Rate (LHR) algorithm, meaning that the card’s mining performance is not limited by NVIDIA. Moreover, from the hashrate information above, the NVIDIA RTX 2060 12GB model is seemingly an improved version of the 6GB model, producing slightly higher hashrates than the older card. However, the RTX 2060 12 GB model may consume additional power, especially for Ethereum mining. According to Red Panda Mining, the difference in power consumption when mining Ethereum could be due to the memory. The 6GB card tested by Red Panda Mining utilizes Samsung GDDR6 memory and consumes over 65W. In contrast, the 12GB card, which uses Micron memory, consumed over 90 W.
To summarize, due to the larger memory, if you are mining memory-based coins, the RTX 2060 12GB may be more efficient than its 6GB counterpart. However, if you are more focused on coins with core-dependent mining algorithms, there would not be much difference between the two RTX 2060 models.
